The Return of Fish

It’s Thursday and time for some more work with mirrors and and smoke, maybe some steam. For steam is healthy they say. You have saunas where your toxins become toxouts and steam irons where the wrinkles in your clothes become more becoming creases. Remember to use distilled water for the steam iron. I learned that lesson in Paris, France ( not Paris, Ontario ) where distilled water is stacked with cleaning supplies. Read about it here.

Steam has other uses, too. Steam turbines, steam engines, all do sterling work in giving us our creature comforts while also creating a bigger hole in the ozone layer. That’s ok, because we can use more engines to produce sunblock; SPF-555 should be out soon, just in time for the Great Warming, which is due soon, just like the San Francisco earthquake is due ‘any day’ now.

I shouldn’t mock the doomsday soothsayers, because just the other day a black bear was shot while strolling around in a suburb of Toronto. I suppose as the tundra melts we shall see polar bears making their way south to scrounge off the garbage cans in the Greater Toronto Area. The ice is melting, Canada is going from frozen wasteland to right-wing wasteland. And isn’t every country going right-wing now? I see the Indians, who adopted a constitution that has the following Preamble:

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;

and to promote among them all

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

have become all nationalistic, read Hindu. Which leaves the millions of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains and Biddhists ( not to mention Parsis ) pondering the future of their liberty of belief, faith and worship in this “socialist secular democratic republic”. Contrary to my personal opinion, it seems, religion is politics and politics is all about religion. No, wait, money, yes that’s it. And power! Money and power. I think I just had a breakthrough, an epiphany of sorts. Wow! And on a Thursday too!

Back to fish, though. And steam. ( I shall leave the sermonizing there, just in case it hits a nerve ).

Steamed fish. En papillote ( if French ) and al cartoccio ( if Italian ). I think it’s the best way to cook fish. The Bengalis, who don’t mind a piece of fish or three, about 3 times a day ( an understatement, if British ), call it bhapa maach ( steamed fish, literally, in that order ). What did you expect? Remind me to talk about the Bengali method of qualifiers for every noun in some other post.
